How many grams of hair you need for extensions is the first question before buying, and grams are exactly what to count: not strands, not bundles, not "packs". Natural hair is sold by weight, a stylist counts weight too, and the number of capsules and the price of the work grow out of it. Below: what the weight depends on, guideline grams for volume and for length, why 70 cm takes more grams than 40, and how many capsules come out of 100 grams.
What the weight depends on
- The goal. Adding density at your own length is one thing; adding 20 to 30 cm of length is another, and the second is always heavier.
- Your hair. The thicker and denser your own hair, the more grams it takes for the added length not to give itself away: thin length under a dense top is visible at once.
- Length. The longer the bundle, the more grams the same density takes — a separate section below.
- Technique. Capsules, tapes and wefts each use hair differently. The guidelines below are for capsule extensions, the most common.
How many grams you need: guidelines
- Volume only, at your own length — 50 to 80 g.
- Length on hair of average density — 100 to 150 g.
- Length on dense hair or extensions from 60 cm — 150 to 200 g and more.
The exact weight is named by a stylist looking at your hair — or by us, from a photo: write to us and we will pick the weight, the length and the shade.
The longer the hair, the more grams the same density takes. One hair 70 cm long weighs twice as much as the same hair at 35 cm — so 100 g of 70 cm hair holds half as many hairs as 100 g of 35 cm hair.
Why 70 cm takes more grams than 40
Weight is the number of hairs multiplied by their length. 100 g at 40 cm is a dense ponytail; the same 100 g at 70 cm is almost half as thin. For long extensions not to look see-through, more grams are taken, and it shows most at the ends: in a regular bundle the longest hairs are always in the minority, so every bundle thins toward the bottom. If you need density all the way down, there is double drawn: it is assembled from several bundles, keeping only the long hair — several times more expensive and always the hair of several heads, so we do not make it; a longer bundle cut to the line gives a close result.
100 grams of hair — how many capsules is that
A capsule is a strand sealed with keratin; it usually weighs 0.8 to 1 g. So 100 g of hair gives roughly 100 to 125 capsules, 150 g — 150 to 190. A stylist can make the strands thinner so the capsules cannot be felt on fine hair, or thicker to install faster — the number of capsules changes, the weight does not. That is why the price of the work, charged per capsule, also grows out of the grams: how much hair extensions cost and what the price is made of.
How grams turn into bundles
A bundle is the hair of one donor gathered into a ponytail. No 2 are the same: in our catalog bundles weigh 60 to 140 g, most often around 100 g, and the exact weight of each is in the specifications of its card. Count like this: the grams you need, collected from bundles. For 120 g that is 1 bundle of 120 g or 2 of 60; for 150 g — 100 and 50. Two bundles of neighboring lengths are installed in layers — the transition toward the ends comes out softer.
Every bundle in the catalog is the same one in the card and in the parcel: it was photographed, it was weighed, and it is the one that arrives. For a bundle from our Krakow warehouse, we match the shade to your hair for free, before shipping.
How not to get the weight wrong
- Ask your stylist in grams. "100 strands" is a different weight with every stylist; grams are the same for everyone.
- Take a reserve for the ends. Better 20 g to spare than see-through ends; the rest goes to replacing strands at the correction.
- Send a photo. A photo of your hair from the back in daylight — and we will name the weight, the length and the shade that will blend with yours.
Frequently asked questions
How many grams of hair do you need for volume without length?
Usually 50 to 80 g: the strands go on the sides and the back to add density at your own length. That is 1 bundle from the catalog, and on fine hair even less.
How many capsules come out of 100 grams of hair?
Roughly 100 to 125: a capsule weighs 0.8 to 1 g. A stylist can make the strands thinner or thicker, and the number of capsules changes while the weight does not.
Is one bundle enough for a full head?
For volume — yes. For length on hair of average density you need 100 to 150 g, and a bundle weighs 60 to 140 g, most often around 100 g — that is 1 to 2 bundles. The weight of each is in its card; collect them up to the grams you need.
How many grams do long extensions, 60 to 70 cm, take?
From 150 g, and on dense hair 200 g and more: 100 g of long hair holds half as many hairs as 100 g of short hair, and without a reserve the length shows through at the ends.
Count grams, not bundles: the weight of every bundle is in its card. In doubt — write to us and we will pick the weight for your volume, the length and the shade from a photo.
